As most of you know Brian is one of America’s masters when it comes to understanding what makes hand tools perform at their best. He has distilled this knowledge in a two-day participatory program that takes you through the core practices that are sure to bring your own woodworking enjoyment and success to a new level. Brian will begin with drawknives and carving knives and take students through spokeshave use, chisel work, and hand plane techniques.
Class includes:
- Introduction to tool edge geometry
- Sharpening techniques
- Souping up the body
- Making a custom spokeshave cap
- Techniques for managing chatter
- Getting a smooth cut from the round bottom shave
- Four step shaping process for creating consistent form
- Correcting curves with a spoke shave
- Troubleshooting what can go wrong and why
Class objectives:
- Establish a foundation/ understanding exactly how hand tools work
- Learn how to control the actual formation of a wood chip with any tool
- Master sharpening skills for consistent results and long lasting edges
- Learn how to analyze what to do in any circumstance when your tools are not performing the way they should.
- Understand peculiarities of A-2 steel
- Have fun together
The list of tools required are as follows:
6-8” drawknife (curved is preferred) Lie Nielsen or Auriou or any of the old ones that have laminated blades
spokeshaves
chisels (both mortise and bench chisels)
card scrapers (.032” thick is ideal)
hand planes
one smoother and one low angle as a minimum

Once space is confirmed a 50% deposit is due to be paid by check. The balance will be due at least 30 days before the class begins. You can of course pay the entire amount with your deposit.
