RUSSELL GALE’S HAND PLANE CLASS

The Boggs Collective is proud to be home for some of the most talented and creative craftspeople in the country. But in addition to being great woodworkers, we look for special individuals that also love to teach, and pass on the greatest traditions of woodworking. Russell Gale is just such a man.
Loyal followers of our blog will already be familiar with Russell as co-designer of The Boggs Collective’s beautiful new Greenwood table. In addition to that, Russell designs and builds elegant clocks, sideboards, and wall cabinets. A native of Western North Carolina, Russell attended both Appalachian State University and the prestigious College of the Redwoods Fine Woodworking Program. This week Russell taught a class on building wooden hand planes in the style of James Krenov at The Boggs Collective workshop.
This type of plane is made to fit the human hand, fashioned from an oversize block of wood, carved and shaped to the woodworkers desired feel. Russell adds, “I also teach a hand tools essentials class where we cover sharpening, the differences in hand tools, why you might choose one over another, and how to tune them up.” His classes are aimed at anybody looking to expand there awareness of what hand tools can do. Russell continues, “I think a lot of people don’t realize what hand tools are capable of, because they are unfamiliar with how to make them work right, and what makes them work. There are a lot of people who have been doing woodworking 30 or 40 years, but they’ve never used hand tools. ”
The hand planes made this week were fashioned from soft maple, which is easy to work and glues up well though they can be made out of just about any wood. Says Russell, “As you make these tools, you can discover what you like.”
